December – Celebrations and Customs

December 9, 2011

It is December, the month of numerous secular and religious holidays, the beginning of winter, the shortest day of the year, and the end of the year. It is often a stressful time for both teachers and students….at home and at school. December can provide an opportunity to explore and learn about a variety of cultures including their celebrations and customs. As you plan for your classroom, be culturally responsive. Hopefully you have already built a community within your classroom. Know your students and their families. Provide a safe atmosphere for students to share their customs and to learn more about and appreciate the customs of others. Below are resources to help you plan culturally relevant and engaging instruction for this month and all year. Remember you can learn from your students too!

Make it a good week.
